Powder-coated

Carefully remove any loose surface deposits with a wet sponge. Use a soft brush (non-abrasive) and a dilute solution of a mild detergent, e.g., pH-neutral liquid hand dishwashing detergent in warm water (DO NOT use solvents) to remove dust, salt, and other deposits. Rinse surfaces with clean water after cleaning to remove residue.

Stainless steel and brass

Use a non-abrasive cloth with warm water for general cleaning. For removing fingerprints, use any glass cleaning products. Towel dry after cleaning to prevent water spotting. Ensuring it is Chloride free, Stainless steel or brass cleaner is acceptable.

Galvanised

Use a non-abrasive cloth with warm water and mild detergent for general cleaning. Thoroughly wash off any residue of detergent with clean water and wipe clean with a soft cloth.

For more stubborn or larger areas, the use of a low-pressure wash (such as a gurney gun), with pure water or in conjunction with cleaning materials such as car or truck wash. The car and truck cleaners are made to minimise corrosion on the metallic parts of vehicles so are generally suitable for use on galvanised steel although it is important that the steel be washed down with freshwater after cleaning.

If your galvanised steel is in a highly corrosive environment e.g. coastal, heavy industrial, etc it is recommended it is rinsed with potable water on a regular basis, particularly under sheltered conditions i.e. not exposed to rain and sun.

Aluminium

Use of non-abrasive cloth with warm water and mild detergent for general cleaning. Thoroughly wash off any residue of detergent with clean water and wipe clean with a soft cloth.

For multi-storey or multi-level applications, there are a number of benefits;

  • Single stud fixing halves the installation time required to set studs, this provides efficiencies and consequently reduces costs to owners.
  • Installation of this pre-assembled modular system, removes the need for on-site glazing, which is inefficient and less cost effective, and enables fast installation of the final competed product.

Due to its C3 safety rating (the highest-level commercial compliance) and versatility Star Metal’s Non-Glazed Balustrading System is well suited to a range of applications, including;

  • Shopping centres,
  • Multi-level high density residential
  • Residential (pool fencing, balcony balustrading, privacy screens, fencing)
  • Architecturally designed buildings and homes
  • Primary schools and high schools
  • Government buildings – such as hospitals, outdoor public venues and recreations areas
  • Universities
  • Restaurants
  • Aged care facilities

 * Powder-coated and painted handrail products use black steel for fabrication, which is then sandblasted and then a zinc primer coating is applied. The powder-coat / paint coat is then applied over the zinc primer creating a dual shield coating with a decorative finish.

Polishing of any type improves the texture, appearance and consistency of stainless steel.

Stainless steel finishes

  • Mirror polish (#8)
  • Satin finish (#4)
  • Mill finish
  • Electropolish

Mirror polish

Polishing of any type improves the texture, appearance and consistency of stainless steel. In the case of mirror polish, it creates a surface with a brilliant shine.

The metal is pre-grinded to remove defects and then bright buffed to bring out a smooth reflective finish that shines even with the least bit of light.

The benefit of the mirror finish is that it also improves corrosion resistance. Further, mirror finish eliminates crevices, where corrosive particles deposit themselves.

Satin polish

A satin finish lacks the brilliant sheen of a mirror polish. The shine has been removed, but unlike a brushed polish, there are no visible brush strokes visible in the metal.

Mill Finish

A mill finish is a semi dull/semi reflective finish. It resembles a hazy mirror, with some reflection and is ideal for heavy traffic surfaces.

Electropolish

Electropolishing removes a microscopically precise layer of surface material, to tolerances as low as +/-.0001″, depending on the alloy.

Electropolishing is a one-stop process for a micro-smooth, ultraclean, corrosion and pathogen-resistant surface finish – with 30 times more corrosion resistance than passivation.

Electropolishing also eliminates the need for additional metal finishing processes like hand deburring, tumbling, pickling and cleaning.

Patina (natural)

Patina occurs naturally over time due to oxidisation, we can use different products to speed up the aging process as well as adding different chemicals to produce different colours and finishes. We can provide bespoke finishes that add depth and complexity for architectural features. Ranges of colours include (but not limited to) blues, greens, bronze, copper, gold, black, rainbow.

It can be a cost-effective solution for substituting products like brass, copper and bronze.

Clear coat (wax coating)

To avoid rust, all steel needs a coating. A clear wax coating provides a beautiful dull finish that looks part of the metal itself while keeping moisture out. Since the wax is only a coating and doesn’t bind with the steel, it must be periodically reapplied. But unless it is in a particularly exposed environment the wax will typically last at least a few years. Having a wax coating can bring out the warmth, colour and texture of your metal.

Galvanised

Hot dip galvanising is the process of immersing clean steel into molten zinc to obtain a coating that is metallurgically bonded to it. The process provides a long term corrosion protection for steel and iron products.
